SUPs origin can be traced back to the early days of Polynesia where it began as a way for surfing instructors to manage large groups of students and increase their visibility of what was going on around them, such as incoming swell. They used a one-bladed paddle, while standing on a normal length surfboard. The modern sport of SUP began in the Hawaiian Islands in the early 1960s, when the Beach Boys of Waikiki would stand on their long boards, and paddle out with outrigger paddles to take pictures of the tourists learning to surf. Now, the sport of SUP can be seen around the globe.

Initially introduced in the US in the 1930’s, the sport experienced a renaissance in the early 1980’s and another boost in popularity in 2000 when celebrities began sampling the sport and more cross-over athletes began using SUP as part of their training regiment to strengthen their core muscles. The sport is very popular in warm coastal climates and resorts where surfing is prevelant, but can also be done anywhere there is easy access to safe waters.*
