Kite Surfing
Have you seen someone Surfing with a Kite? Wondering what that was called? It was most likely kitesurfing (aka kiteboarding). Kitesurfing uses a large kite harnessed to the body to ride on water, snow or land. It can be done with a board specifically for kiteboarding know as a kiteboard. Or some kiters use surfboards to kite with. This is typically done in the waves along the beach. Kitesurfers will do downwinders where they run down the beach for miles using the kite. The terms are often used interchangeably. Kitesurfing is often more referred to using a kite with surfboard in the waves. Kiteboarding is more often used to be a general term for the sport. In the US, most people will use them interchangeably but kiteboarding is the more general term with kitesurfing being more specific to the use with a surfboard.

A kitesurfing kite uses the force of the wind to create lift. The rider then uses this lift from the kite to propel themselves over the water one some sort of board. It is a form of sailing.

Kitesurfing itself is only dangerous if performed in improper conditions or with older unsafe equipment. Every action sport has it’s inherent risks. But a seasoned kitesurfer knows these risks and how to minimize them.
